tit-for-tat expulsions

An exchange of expulsions of diplomatic agents. This usually begins when one state declares a number of members of a diplomatic mission persona non grata for having engaged in ‘activities incompatible with their status’, i.e. almost invariably espionage. The state that has suffered then replies by expelling a group of diplomats from the first state who - if the size of that state\'s diplomatic mission permits it - are equivalent in number and rank to those who have been returned to it. This is a good example of the principle of reciprocity.
