trade office

Often previously known as a ‘trade mission’, one generally established by a state outside the capital city of the receiving state, with a view to furthering the sending state\'s trade or commerce. However, when such an office is employed as a disguise for work that is as political as it is economic, notably when states are not in diplomatic relations (sense 1), it is usually located inside the capital, as in the case of the British Trade Mission (subsequently Embassy) opened in Cairo at the end of the 1950s. Sometimes such a post is called a trade promotion office, or a commercial office. See also representative office; satellite office; trade commissioner; trade officer; trade representative.
