trade officer

A non-diplomatic agent who serves in, and is very possibly the head of, a state\'s trade office or commercial office outside the capital city of the receiving state. Sometimes such an officer is attached to a consular post, in which case he or she is likely to enjoy, as of right, consular privileges and immunities. Otherwise, special arrangements may be made for the officer to be accorded certain privileges and immunities, either formally or as a matter of understood courtesy. Such arrangements are likely to bear a fairly close relationship to those for consular officers as set out in the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations. Today a trade officer is very likely to be a member of his or her state\'s foreign service. See also trade commissioner; trade representative.
