The term employed by Henry A.Kissinger to describe the relationship which he sought to create in the early 1970s between Washington, Moscow, and Peking. This meant détente with the Soviet Union and rapprochement with the People\'s Republic of China, together with a continuation of the deep Sino-Soviet rift - the third side of the triangle. As the only party to be on reasonable terms with both, Kissinger believed, with some justice, that only the United States was in a position to obtain concessions from each by the simple expedient of intimating the possibility of moving even closer to the other. |
