Uniting for Peace resolution |
| |
| |
A resolution passed by the UN General Assembly in 1950 in the hope that it would facilitate Assembly recommendations for the maintenance of peace in circumstances where the Security Council was unable to act because of a veto. At its core was the provision that in this event an emergency special session of the Assembly could be called on 24 hours notice on the vote of any seven members of the Council or on the call of a majority of UN members. It was passed in face of strong opposition from the Soviet bloc, but was never used against these states in the manner in which they feared – and the then-Western majority in the UN hoped. It has, however, been used on a number of other types of occasion. |
