The acronym for Coordinated Universal Time, the accepted term for what used to be – and often still is – called Greenwich Mean Time. The new term emerged in 1970 from the International Telecommunication Union, which also felt that in order to eliminate confusion a single acronym should be adopted. However, it was found impossible to agree on using either the English word order, CUT, or the French word order, TUC, and UTC was chosen as a compromise. Whether the objective of employing one acronym to remove confusion was actually achieved must be considered a moot point! |
