uti possidetis
The doctrine that existing territorial boundaries should be preserved. It was used in support of the claim of the incoming regimes in former colonial territories to inherit all of the territory; and subsequently in support of their denial of the right of ethnic sub-groups to secede or join a neighbouring state. Both assertions were well received. The first minimized problems for the outgoing colonial powers; and the second was thought by all the successor regimes to be very much in their interest. |
