Vattel, Emmerich de (1714-67)

Born in Neuchâtel in Switzerland, Vattel was a diplomat but achieved his fame for his writing on international law. In 1746 he obtained employment in the diplomatic service of the Elector of Saxony and in the following year was appointed minister plenipotentiary at Berne. Not finding his duties taxing, it was here that he completed his major work, Le Droit des Gens (The Law of Nations). Published in 1758, this swiftly became a standard work, not least for its treatment of diplomatic law. Indeed, it has been said that this represents the last of the great classic writings on the subject. In Vattel, diplomatic privileges and immunities were grounded firmly in their functional necessity for the efficient conduct of diplomacy.
