war crime

A breach, by an individual, of the laws of war (or of, as this subject is now known, international humanitarian law). Such laws used to refer only to those who participated immediately in war. But in the major war crimes trials which took place after the Second World War, the concept of war crimes was extended to cover crimes against peace, and crimes against humanity - for which the political leaders of the defeated states could be, and were, indicted. See also international criminal law.
