Often used during the Cold War to refer to the non-Communist states of Europe and America, and more particularly to those of them who were members of NATO, which was then an alliance established to counter the Eastern bloc.
That part of the world which is generally termed western, as contrasted (in both historical and cultural terms) with the East or the Orient. |
